An open system for the purposes of this discussion is one in which the manufacturer of the technology permits other manufacturer's hardware to run its operating system and loosely controls what software is permitted to run on its hardware. Examples of this would include Google's Chromebook (manufactured by Samsung, Toshiba, HP, and others) and Google's Android OS, which can run on various tablets, smart-phone, and smart-watch platforms. The ethical issue presented by an open system is one of an end-user (including public school districts and their students) having greater control over the technology.
The three major ethical factors in choosing an open system are ones of support, students, and information technology philosophy.
