CLOSED SYSTEM

What is a "closed system"?

A closed system for the purposes of this discussion is one in which the manufacturer of the technology only permits its hardware to run its operating system and tightly controls what software is even permitted to run on its hardware. Examples of this include Apple's Macintosh OSX, which can only run on its computer platforms, both desktops and laptops, and Apple's iOS, which can only run on its tablet and smart-phone platforms. The ethical issue presented by a closed system is the level of control an end-user (including public school districts and their students) has over the technology.

The three major ethical factors in choosing a closed system are ones of support, students, and information technology philosophy.
